In Lieu of Flowers
In lieu of flowers, Wendy's family invites you to honor Wendy's memory by making a donation to Hero's Heart Animal Rescue. Your generous contribution will help continue her legacy and support causes that were close to her heart.

There are so many animals needing help in northern Minnesota, and very few established rescues/shelters to help them. You help is very much needed.

A Message from Hero's Heart Animal Rescue Vice President, Connie Sackett
Wendy LOVED to rescue. She was game for any adventure any time. Day or night. Unless she wasn't feeling well, she never said no! And she knew how to trap. The engineer in her always came out. When I didn't know how to trap a cat, she always came up with a plan. I relied on her for that. For building things too. I have a beautiful walk-in cage in my foster kitty room that will always remind me of her.

Some of my fondest memories are:
Sitting in her tiny bathroom upstairs over her garage (when she lived by me), drinking a bottle wine, after a litter of kittens were just born. We loved celebrating special moments.
Watching her run up to me when she trapped a bobcat. We were attempting to traps cats that the bobcat was trying to kill. Yet the first cat she trapped was the bobcat. It was winter and I was sitting in the car trying to stay warm. She came running up to the car with the most excited look on her face, while yelling "I trapped the bobcat!" Priceless!!

And...One very early winter morning when we were having a blizzard, she called me because a new mom cat that we had recently trapped was hanging in an old screen from the top story window of her new house. She couldn't get the fire department to come. So I went over, found a sheet of styrofoam in her garage and climbed a ladder up to the window. I held the styrofoam flat against the window so she could pull the cat inside. The cat was feral and bolted back against the styrofoam and I yelled, thinking I was going to get knocked backwards off the ladder. Well I didn't, and she got the cat in. I ran inside her house and up to the bedroom. When she saw me, she busted into tears and hugged me. She had been afraid I fell!! And she showed no concern over her bleeding hand/fingers where the cat had bit her.
Then we put mom back with newborn babies and sat and cried together (happiness). Again - celebration. But these are only a very few of my memories. Not all ended happily, but Wendy could withstand the bad ones too. She always plugged away to save as many as she could. She was not afraid of feral cats and she believed they should have every chance of a good life as a social cat. This is a very special trait of a rescuer.

Wendy was such a nurturing person - she LOVED feeding bottle babies. That was her specialty. I knew by the way that she treated animals that she must have been a very special mother too. I will miss Wendy so much. I wish we could have had one last chat to reminisce - it would have gone on all night.

Wendy fostered numerous cats and kittens when she lived in Sun Prairie too. I loved joining her to cuddle her fosters in her home. A very special memory is when she brought a tote filled with kittens to my home for my parents to choose their adopted cats. Wendy encouraged them to take two. They chose Sarah and Big Boy, with my promise that I would care for them when they no longer could.
Wendy did have SUCH a love for kitties, and it was an honor to watch her work her magic with cats. I have one of her rescues, and some fond memories of her myself. Your memory goes on in our hearts!
